Location North Iceland Cabin

The Iceland Unlimited Quality cabin is located in the ‘Capital of the North’- Akureyri, just about 10 minutes’ drive from the city center. The city of Akureyri is the largest municipality in Iceland after the ones in the ‘capital area’ and has a population of about 19,000 people. The city lies at the base of Eyjafjörður Fjord and has a lot to offer.

What to do in Akureyri

In the city itself you will find many interesting attractions. Guests should not miss the chance to climb up the great set of stairs leading to Akureyrarkirkja (or the church of Akureyri). As the church is located on a top of a hill, it offers a great view over the city center! Wheelchair users can park right in front of the church and enjoy the scenery.

Another interesting stop is the Botanical Garden containing almost every plant that grows in Iceland and other species that can be found in other countries, such as Greenland. New species are constantly added to the collection and a stop at the gardens is a must for the visitors of Akureyri as much as for the locals! The gardens are located less than 1 km from the city center and the entrance is free of charge.

The history of Akureyri is beautifully demonstrated in the buildings of the old town, the strip of land between the water and the mountains. There, you will find the oldest building of the city (built in 1795) as well as the charming buildings housing the town hall and primary school.

More Things to do in Akureyri

At the harbor, you will see the iconic, round building; Hof, which offers facilities for conferences, parties and exhibitions. You can also join a whale watching tour departing from the harbor in the city center. Some of the boats are accessible for wheelchair users. It would be best to contact us in advance so that we can co-arrange everything with the tour operator.

For those who want to do some shopping, you will find the Glerártorg Mall, just a few minutes’ walk from the heart of the city. There you will find a selection of e.g. fashion and sport stores along with nice restaurants and a super market – which can be very useful for when you want to prepare your meals in the cabin.

Visitors who are driving in the city will probably notice anyway, but even if you walk, don’t forget to take a look at the uniquely heart shaped traffic lights!

As every other place in Iceland, Akureyri could not lack a great geothermal swimming pool. Actually, the one found here is one of the biggest in Iceland. The pool area includes two 25m outdoor pools, pummeling water jets, water slides, a splash pool, an indoor pool, four hot pots, a steam bath and an extensive area for sunbathing. All the pools are heated by natural geothermal water. Temps range from a pleasant 27°C to the warmest hot pot; 42°C.

Akureyri also offers a selection of museums for varied interests such as the Akureyri Art Museum, Akureyri Museum, Icelandic Aviation Museum, Motorcycle Museum and Industrial Museum, just to name a few.

Here you’ll find a cookie house and a beautiful garden with Christmas melodies all around. It is located about 8.5 km from the Iceland Unlimited Quality Cabin.

Our Recommendations for Wonderful Day Tours

The North of Iceland is one of the most fascinating areas, featuring some otherworldly natural attractions and breath-taking signs of the force of nature.

1. Myvatn and its Surroundings

A must do tour from Akureyri is one to the Lake Myvatn area. There are many highlights to explore such as Goðafoss waterfall, the pseudo-craters of Skútustaðir, Mt. Námafjall, Dimmuborgir Lava Fields and Grjótagjá, the rift between the Eurasian & American Continents. Also recommended is a visit to the Myvatn Nature baths, the North’s answer to the Blue Lagoon. One of the most spectacular things to do in the area is visiting the Lofthellir Cave.  Here, you must be prepared to hike, crawl and even slide a bit on the ice, and then be amazed by the formations inside the cave. The main attraction of the cave is the greatest natural ice sculptures currently known in Iceland, formed by thousands of years of dripping water.

2. Diamond Circle

Another classic tour you should consider when in Akureyri is the so called ‘Diamond Circle’ tour. In this tour you will explore the most powerful waterfall in Europe (Dettifoss), Asbyrgi Canyon and Husavik, the whale watching capital of Iceland. There, we highly recommend joining a whale watching tour on a traditional sailing boat or RIB boat.

3. Troll Peninsula

The troll peninsula is another area that you can explore when based in Akureyri. The area is believed to be home to trolls and you will get to see why if you choose to visit. You can e.g. visit the turf farmhouse at Glaumbær folk museum, the beautiful town of Siglufjörður and Hofsós fishing village with its amazing outdoor swimming pool.

4. Many more Options

From Akureyri, you also have the opportunity to cross the arctic circle, either by plane or boat. If you choose the latter option, you might even get a glimpse of whales and puffins on your way (puffins are only in Iceland during the summer).

If you are feeling adventurous, you also have the option to join a super jeep tour leading to the isolated highlands of Iceland and it’s amazing lunar landscape. The Askja Caldera, one of the biggest volcanoes in Iceland is the highlight of such tours.

In case sightseeing is not your cup of tea, and you prefer more active ways of spending your time, there are plenty activities to choose from. During winter time, you can choose between a plethora of snow-related activities such as snowmobiling or dog sledding.

The areas close to Akureyri also offer great opportunities for horse back riding in breathtaking scenery. We highly recommend this 2 hours horseback riding tour in Grenivik.
