Seljavallalaug – a Hidden Gem in Iceland

Around Iceland are few hidden gems that are often only known to the locals. One of these gems is Seljavallalaug swimming pool, hidden in a narrow valley on the south coast close to Seljavellir, under the infamous volcano, Eyjafjallajökull.

A Hidden Swimming Pool in Iceland

Seljarvallarlaug geothermal pool is one of the oldest swimming pools in Iceland and was built in 1923. The pool which is now protected is 25 meters long and 10 meters wide, was the largest pool in Iceland until 1936. Though a new pool has been built not so far from this one, people can still go swimming in the old pool free of charge, but at their own risk.

The hike from the new swimming pool where you can park your car, takes approximately 15 minutes. A visit to this pool can be easily integrated in most of our self-drive tours.
