Iceland Ice Climbing & Glacier Hike Close to Vik

Looking for some adrenaline and new experiences? Join this exciting day tour departing from the base camp at Sólheimajökull Glacier in South Iceland.

Sólheimajökull is the southwestern outlet of the vast Myrdalsjökull glacier. It is about 8 kilometers long and with a width of approximately 2 kilometers. This place is very popular and situated close to the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall (the one where you can walk behind), the Eyjafjallajökull 2010 volcano and the picturesque Skógafoss waterfall. Nothing beats topping these unique views with a breathtaking and thrilling ice experience.

Exploring the majestic landscapes of Sólheimajökull glacier is simply a must when visiting the beautiful South Coast of Iceland. Therefore several glacier tour options are available on this glacier. But if you are looking for something a bit more challenging and exciting we would definitely recommend this glacier walk and ice climbing tour. This tour is longer than the others, so please count around 3 to 4 hours on the glacier (and 4 to 5 hours in total). If you are willing to learn every secret about glaciers, experience something unique while in Iceland and see what you are capable of – this is the perfect tour for you!

Iceland Ice Climbing – Spend an Unforgettable Day on the Ice

After arrival at the meeting point, your guide provides you with good hiking shoes, hard enough for ice climbing which is really important. You will also be given crampons to safely walk on the glacier and an ice ax to help you. Discover this large glacier tongue and all its secrets. Learn about the different ice formations and the reasons why they are shaped this way. Understand how to differentiate old and new ice, check some crevasses, mills, and waterfalls within the glacier and so much more.

Your guide will then find a good spot to initiate you to ice climbing. Listen to his advice and try yourself! Try maybe another spot, a bit more challenging? The glacier walk and ice climbing is a special tour full of adventures within a small group setting (maximum 6 persons per guide). This gives you more time for questions and exchanges with your guide and your fellow travelers. But also more time to walk, climb, discover, stop, rest and enjoy the view.

Iceland Ice Climbing – Requirements for the tour
