Iceland Ice Cave Summer Tour – Close to Vik – Available All Year

Do not miss the chance of visiting a natural ice cave during your holiday in Iceland. This unique ice cave, located close to Vík in the south of Iceland, is only accessible via super jeep. We are sure it will amaze you and we highly recommend including it in one of our self-drive tours.

The ice caves in Iceland are very unique but so far we had to inform our summer guests that it is not possible to visit them between April and October. This luckily changed, since a new natural ice cave was found last winter close to Vík. This ice cave is safe to visit also during summer so if you are looking for something off the typical tourist track, this is the tour for you!

You will meet your guide and the rest of your group in Vík (approximately 2.5 hours drive from Reykjavík). Please arrive at least 20 minutes earlier at the Ice Cave Café in Vík / Icewear Store / Vík Wool. From there, a huge super jeep will bring you to the hidden ice cave under the volcano Katla. You will drive on a bumpy, rugged mountain road to the glacier Kötlujökull. Please be prepared for an exciting 30-minute drive with gorgeous views.

After arriving at the glacier, crampons are provided for walking on the ice. The glacier ice is shimmering in different layers of ice and the different colored stripes are otherworldly. At one point, the glacier has an opening and this is exactly where you will be going. Giant ice walls greet you at the entrance and you will go deeper and deeper into the glacier. At the very end of the natural ice-tunnel is another opening. This hole in the glacier roof creates a unique atmosphere and looks almost like a cathedral dome out of pure natural ice. Your guide will tell you all about the history of the glacier, the ice cave, and the area around it making the tour educating and exciting all at once.

This guided ice cave summer tour is operated by one of our reliable partners.
