Currently not offered: Westman Islands from Reykjavik by Plane

Visit Iceland‘s most famous volcano island Heimaey in the Westman Islands archipelago. Get in touch with a volcanic crater, touch lava which is still warm, see puffins, learn more about its history and join a boat tour around the island.

In the morning you fly from Reykjavik to the volcano island Heimaey in the Westman Islands archipelago. On a guided bus tour you will visit the volcanic crater of Eldfell – Iceland’s most famous volcano.  The volcano’s last eruption started in January 1973, caused a major crisis for the island and nearly led to its permanent evacuation. You will walk up to the crater where the ground is still warm enough to bake a bread in it. From the top you have a wonderful view over the whole island.

You will also visit a puffin nesting area and you have the chance to come very close to this cute little birds. Puffins are without doubt the most charismatic of Iceland‘s seabirds and thousands of birds nest during summer on the Westman Islands. Please have in mind that the puffins come to land only in the breeding season (mid of April until mid of August). They spend the rest of the year out at sea closer to Greenland than Iceland.

In the afternoon you join a boat tour around the island where you will see various caves, thousands of seabirds and occasionally also some whales. The boat trip ends by sailing into the ocean cave Kletthellir. A musical instrument will be played to showcase the cave‘s stunning acoustics. In the evening you will enjoy a 20 minutes flight back to Reykjavik.
