You enter the highlands through Þjorsardalur valley. From there Iceland‘s best-known volcano Hekla is clearly visible. Hekla has erupted numerous times blanketing Iceland with thick layers of ash and pumice and for centuries people believed it is the gateway to hell. On the way to Landmannalaugar, you will visit Stöng a reconstructed Viking-era farmstead. The farm is believed to have been destroyed in the Hekla eruption in the year 1104. You will also visit the picturesque waterfall Hjálpafoss.
The area in the highlands is unbelievable rugged, volcanic and beautiful in its own way.
