Home / Day Tours / Reykjavík / Reykjanes Peninsula and Inside the Volcano Tour
Go on an unforgettable guided tour inside the volcano Thrihnukagigur. This is the only place on earth where you can enter a magma chamber. Furthermore, this tour includes a privately guided tour of the volcanic Reykjanes peninsula where you will enjoy lunar landscapes and geothermal wonders.
Early in the morning you will be picked up by your private guide to explore the volcanic peninsula Reykjanes. On a clear day, you will see the volcano mountain Keilir from the distance. Scientists believe Mount Keilir is actually the plug of a large crater. The first highlight for today is a walk between two continents. You have the chance to walk on one of the world’s major tectonic plate boundaries. Cross the small bridge which was built as a symbol of the connection between Europe and North America. This plate boundary lies across Iceland and is the reason why Iceland has a high concentration of active volcanoes. The latest volcanic eruption on Reykjanes was in the 13. century and you will see many old lava fields covered with moss during your tour.
Continuing the tour, you will be driven to the Gunnuhver geothermal area where you can see the hot spring and boiling water as well as get an impression of the surroundings. Gunnuhver has enlarged in recent years and is therefore also a good proof of the volcanic activities on the Reykjanes peninsula. What might have an added value to the excitement of visiting Gunnuhver is that it got its name from a female ghost causing disturbances to the area until she was finally trapped by a priest and fell into the spring!
Moving on, you will visit the famous Blue Lagoon to get an impression of the area. Unfortunately, there is not enough time for a bath but you will make a short photo stop to see this famous lagoon in the middle of a lava field.
In the afternoon, you get to experience Earth to the maximum, by walking inside the volcano Thrihnukagigur! You will meet with your volcano guide and other travelers for an approximately 45-minute hike, before going inside the volcano. Not enough can be said about experiencing that, but to give you an idea, you will go 120 meters / 400 feet to the bottom of the crater in an open cable lift. Although it might sound intimidating, the experienced guides and security measurements ensure your safe return upon the ground. You will stay for 35 to 40 minutes inside the volcano and you have enough time to enjoy the breath-taking colorations found inside this enormously big volcano. Taste a delicious traditional Icelandic meat soup and after a hike back to the car, you will be driven back to Reykjavik by your private guide.
