Grimsey Island Tour – Sightseeing Flight over the Arctic Circle

Fly across the Arctic Circle and make long-lasting memories! This sightseeing flight takes you from Akureyri towards Grímsey Island, the only place in Iceland located above the Arctic Circle. Included is a 2-hour stop on the island with a guided tour and a tasting of traditional Icelandic cuisine.

While the mainland of Iceland is just a few degrees south of the Arctic Circle, it however passes through Grimsey Island, which lies only 40 kilometers (25 miles) off the north coast of Iceland. Take your chance and visit this special place on a sightseeing flight from Akureyri.

You will go on a 30-minute flight from Akureyri with beautiful scenery on the way and a fair chance to see humpback whales en-route, in addition to the spectacular Troll Peninsula. There, you will meet your local guide who takes you on an interesting tour through the island and its charming natural beauty (for approximately 1.5 hours).

Grímsey is not only famous for lying on the Arctic Circle but also for its rich birdlife. During summer, thousands of puffins (and other seabirds) nest on this island. Watching the cute puffins nesting in 100 meters high cliffs is a unique experience, not only for birdwatchers. The puffins are not shy nor scared of humans and Grímsey island is one of the best bird-watching sites in Iceland.

Grímsey island is one of the last remaining true Icelandic fishing villages and before heading back to Akureyri, you can taste a sample of traditional Icelandic cuisine served by local villagers. You will also receive an “Arctic Circle Crossing” badge and a certificate as a proof of having been so far up north.

This sightseeing tour to Grímsey Island is operated by one of our reliable partners.
