This 4×4 highland tour of Iceland takes you across the highland interior of Iceland to visit some of the most spectacular natural features that the island has to offer. You will explore places such as Þingvellir National Park, Hveravellir geothermal area, Lake Mývatn, Askja Caldera, Víti Crater, Landmannalaugar, Skaftafell and many more. On the way you will cross small streams, encounter vast lava fields and drive between shiny glaciers. This highland tour of Iceland has everything for the more adventurous self drive traveler.




Day 1: Arrival to Iceland

First day of your highland tour of Iceland. Private meet and greet at Keflavik International, followed by a transfer to your hotel in down town Reykjavik. Settle in to your hotel and after that, explore the northernmost capital of the world. After you have checked in to your hotel and received your travel documents, you have the option to have a private meeting with one of our travel agent in our office, located in Borgartún 27 3rd floor.  In the evening, we recommend that you visit one of many gourmet restaurants that Reykjavik has to offer. Overnight at your hotel in the center of the city.

Day 2: Natural Splendor & The Highland

Highland tour of IcelandAfter breakfast you will receive your rental vehicle and your 4×4 self drive tour around Iceland starts. First stop is the UNESCO World Heretage Site, Þingvellir. A place of immense natural beauty and rich in history and geological features. Next up is the Great Geyser site and Gullfoss Waterfall. It‘s ideal to have lunch in either site before crossing the highland interior of Iceland via the Kjölur Highland Road, located between two glaciers. Be sure to make a stop at Hveravellir Hot Temperature Area where you can bathe in a natural hot spring, before continuing and arriving in Skagafjörður Fjord. Overnight in Sauðárkrókur village for the night.

Day 3: North Iceland & Lake Mývatn

Highland tour of IcelandHave a good breakfast before driving to the charming village of Akureyri via the beautiful coastal villages of Siglufjörður, Ólafsfjörður and Dalvík.  You will drive around the north side of Tröllaskagi peninsula  before reaching Akureyri where it is optimal to stop for lunch before traveling to the breathtaking Lake Mývatn area. On the way to Lake Mývatn, make sure to stop at Goðafoss Waterfall which will be visible on your right side from the main road en route to Mývatn. Arrive to Lake Mývatn and explore this other worldly area with it‘s strange lava formations, boiling mud pools and pseudo craters. It is optional to take a short hike to the top of Mt.Hverfjall, an extinct volcanic crater that dominates the Mývatn scenery. In the evening, it‘s ideal to soak in the  “Mývatn Nature Baths” ( and relax after a busy day of travel and sightseeing. Stay overnight in the area of Lake Mývatn. Driving distance approx. 260 km / 162 mi.

Day 4: The Diamond Circle

Highland tour of IcelandToday, you will drive the so called Diamond Circle of North East Iceland. Start by driving to the mighty Dettifoss Waterfall, the most powerful in Europe. Continue north to the Ásbyrgi Canyon and enjoy the tranquility of this forrested natural gem of Iceland. Drive west towards the village of Húsavík where you can enjoy an optional whale-watching tour (takes around 3 hours) Drive back to your hotel via the beautiful Aðaldalur Valley. In Aðaldalur, you can stop at Laxárvirkjun Underground Powerstation, located in the mouth of the magnificent Laxárdalur Valley.  Stay overnight around Lake Mývatn. Driving distance approx. 230 km / 140 mi.

Day 5: Return to the highland

Highland tour of IcelandIt‘s now time to return to the highland plateau of Iceland and head for the spectacular Askja Crater. On the way to Askja, you should stop in Herðubreiðalindir, located by the foot of Mt.Herðubreið that some say is the most beautiful of all Icelandic mountains. You will need to cross a small fresh water river on this route but please notice that your car rental insurgence does not cover any rental car mishaps that occur in water.  Continue via rough gravel road to Askja Caldera with a couple of small river crossings on the way. The hike from the Askja parking spot to the edge of the caldera takes around 20 minutes and is well worth the effort. It offers a splendid view across the Lake Öskjuvatn and the sulfur smelling Víti Crater that you can actually bathe in if interested but you might need a shower when you come to your hotel in the evening. Drive towards the Egilsstaðir village where you will stay overnight.

Day 6: The Eastern Fjords of Iceland

Today you will leave Egilsstaðir and travel through the beautiful East Fjords of Iceland. Although, each fjord is unique and worth visiting, there is a shorter way to the south coast where you‘re heading via the Öxi Mt.Road that you can take to save some time if you want to explore the Egilsstaðir area more extensively. Make your way to the tranquil and charming village of Djúpivogur where you will stay for the night. It is possible to take a boat tour to Papey Islands, (believed to have been inhabited by Irish monks) from Djúpivogur Harbor or enjoy a 2 hour deep sea fishing tour. Note that the Papey Island tour departs at 13:00pm and takes 5 hours.  Driving distance approx. 300 km / 188 mi.

Day 7: Glacier Lagoon & Skaftafell Park

Today you will see and experience the crown jewel of Icelandic natural beauties, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Head south to the picturesque lagoon Jökulsárlón, where we highly recommend that you enjoy a 40 minute boat tour in between the icebergs that are breaking off the glacier fall and floating on the lagoon.Continue to the beautiful, Skaftafell area, located in Vatnajökull National Park. A lush green oasis between the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier and Skeiðarársandur Black Desert. A short hike to the Svartifoss Waterfall that‘s falling off a series of pitch black, hexagonal basalt colums is recommended. Stay the night in Skaftafell/ Kirkjubæjarklaustur area. Driving distance approx. 200 km / 124 mi.

Day 8: South Coast & Landmannalaugar

Highland tour of IcelandDrive across the Skeiðarársandur Black Sand Desert and pass the majestic Mt.Lómagnúpur on your way to the charming village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Stop to explore the amazing and often overlooked Fjaðárgljúfur Canyon. Cross the vast Eldhraun Lava Field before turning right and taking the No.208 Fjallabak highland route towards the spectacular Landmannalaugar area. On the way there,stop by Ófærufoss waterfall. Landmannalaugar is located by the end of a black and rugged lava field and surrounded by extremely colorful mountains. Once there, you‘ll have the opportunity to bathe in a splendid natural hot pool. Stay overnight in Hrauneyjar Highland Hotel, located close by. Driving distance approx. 150 km / 93 mi.

Day 9: Reykjavik via Þjórsárdalur Valley

Drive from Hrauneyjar Hotel down to the South Coast via Þjórsárdalur Valley. On the way there, it‘s possible to enjoy an optional ATV tour from Hólaskógur. In Þjórsárdalur, you will find a reconstructed Viking Chiftain‘s farm and the beautiful Hjálparfoss Waterfall. Drive past Mt.Hekla, the most active volcano in Iceland, towards the south coast. Drive through the village of Selfoss towards the green house village of Hveragerði, where you can see geo thermal activity in the center of town! Drive over the Hellisheiði Pass and stop at the Hellisheiði Geo Thermal Powerstation where you can enjoy an optional tour and aquire knowledge about sustainable, eco-friendly, geo thermal energy. Arrive in Reykjavik and drop off the rental car. Overnight in a down town hotel in Reykjavik City center. Driving distance approx. 210 km / 135 mi.

Day 10: Departure

Transfer to Keflavik airport with FlyBus in time for your departure. If your flight is in the afternoon, it‘s possible to stop at the Blue Lagoon where you can enjoy soaking in the milky blue waters of the lagoon and also have optional spa treatments which will leave you relaxed and rejuvinated before your flight back home.
