NL-12 – Iceland Westfjords Tour – Guided Tour for 8 Days

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik

northern lights in icelandYour winter adventure in Iceland is about to begin! Once you arrive in Keflavik International Airport, you will be welcomed by our private chauffeur, who will transfer you to your accommodation in the heart of Reykjavik. Before leaving the city to the remote Westfjords tomorrow, we recommend exploring some of the landmarks of Reykjavík, like Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa Music Hall and the Sun Voyager Sculpture by the sea.

You should also visit Tjörnin, a small pond in central Reykjavik. In the winter months it is occupied with swans and other sea birds. Right next to it you will find the Reykjavik City Hall (often closed on weekends) which houses a large 3D map of Iceland. If you have the time, visit some of the interesting museums and galleries in town. In the evening, dine at one of many gourmet restaurants in Reykjavík, and simply enjoy a beautiful winter night amongst the colorful old houses in the city center.

Highlights of the day: Reykjavík City, Hallgímskirkja church, Laugavegur shopping street, Harpa concert and conference centre, and more

Day 2: The Golden Circle with Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss & Geyser

iceland-in-winterToday you will join a guided day tour around the Golden Circle area on a minibus. First, you will visit Þingvellir National Park, which is where the world’s first parliament was founded. This beautiful National Park is also one of the few sites in the world where you can observe two divergent tectonic plates on the surface.

After leaving Þingvellir, you will visit the Geyser Geothermal Area. There, Geysir is no longer active, but nearby Strokkur keeps gushing up about every five to eight minutes to the gaze and amaze of its spectators. Next to the parking lot is a big souvenir shop and two restaurants.

iceland-in-summerAfter you enjoyed one of Iceland´s most famous tourist attractions, you will only need 10 minutes to reach Gullfoss, the Golden Falls. Here you can read about how a farmer´s daughter saved the falls from the hands of entrepreneurs who wanted to build a dam in the area. In the late afternoon, you return to Reykjavik where you will spend another night.

Highlights of the day: Þingvellir National Park, Geyser area, Gullfoss Waterfall and, more

Day 3: West of Iceland with Hot Springs and Waterfalls

iceland-in-the-winterIn the morning you will be picked up and join your fellow travelers to the adventurous Westfjords. On the way you will explore the highlights of West Iceland. The first stop is the Settlement Center in Borgarnes, where you will gain knowledge on the history of Iceland. After exploring the exhibition, you will have lunch at the museum restaurant.

Later on, you will continue towards the largest hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver and the spectacular waterfalls, Barnafoss and Hraunfossar. Continue to the picturesque Westfjords, to Heydalur Guesthouse, where you will spend the next four nights. In the evening, a three course dinner awaits you, and later on, you can relax in the sizzling hot tubs on site.

Highlights of the day: Borgarnes, Settlement Center, Hot spring, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls, and more

Day 4 + Day 5 + Day 6: Westfjords Winter Adventure

iceland-guided-winter-tourFor the next three days you will enjoy the remoteness of the Westfjords and take part in various interesting excursions. Please note that the excursions go hand in hand with weather conditions, and can also depend on the guests’ interests. Typically included in the program is a guided tour to Ísafjörður, the capital of the Westfjords. On your way there, you will visit the Fox Museum in Súðavík, and Litli Bær for waffles with the locals. The scenery is absolutely amazing, so plenty of photo stops will also be made.

There is almost no light pollution around Heydalur, so if the weather conditions are good, your chances are high to catch the magical aurora floating in the winter sky. On a clear night, we highly recommend relaxing in one of the outdoor pools, enjoying the stars while waiting for winter-iceland-westfjords-tourthe display of the Northern Lights.

Heydalur offers a variety of possibilities to bathe and relax in warm water. You will find a swimming pool located inside the green house, which guests are welcome to use at any time. Furthermore, you should try the Heydalur’s thermal spring. The water in this hot pot is around 40°C (depending on the outside temperature).

Do not miss some wonderful winter activities!

winter-westfjords-tourThe activities/excursions can vary, depending on the season. During high winter you have the chance to go on a guided ice fishing tour, a long hike with snow shoes, or a cross-country skiing tour in the valley of Heydalur and Sængurfoss. In autumn your guide can organize a horseback riding – and/or kayaking tour. Another option is to hike to the glacier Drangajökull. During your stay in Guesthouse Heydalur, breakfast, lunch and a three course dinner is always included.  Delicious local food guaranteed!

Highlights of the days: Trip to Isafjörður, Visit of the Fox Museum and Litli Bær, snow shoe hike, ice fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, and more
