Frequently asked questions
Find answers to your questions about our tours and travel experiences in Iceland and beyond.
Can I do a self-drive tour in Iceland if I have limited mobility?
Yes, in many cases. Self-drive tours give you complete control over pace and stops, which is often the best format for travelers who want flexibility without a guide. Your Travel Consultant will advise on routes where the key viewpoints are close to parking and the terrain suits your situation. For people who need an adapted vehicle, speak with your TC about what's available.
How does the planning process work for accessible tours?
You get in touch and a Travel Consultant based in Reykjavík reaches out directly. They'll ask about your wheelchair type or mobility aid, your level of independence, your group, and your travel dates. From there they'll design an itinerary and go through it with you before anything is confirmed. Nothing is booked until you're satisfied that every stop works for your situation.
Are small group tours suitable for people who use wheelchairs?
No. Small group tours use standard vehicles without ramps and move at a group pace that cannot be adjusted for individual needs. For people who use wheelchairs, private guided tours or self-drive tours with adapted vehicles are the right format. Your Travel Consultant can help you decide which works best.
Do I need to bring my own wheelchair or mobility equipment?
No. Iceland Unlimited can arrange wheelchair rental, scooter rental, shower chairs, and other mobility aids so you don't need to fly with your own equipment. Your Travel Consultant arranges this through the booking process.
What kind of vehicle is used on accessible tours?
Our accessible tours use specially adapted minibuses with wheelchair ramps and secure clamping. You stay in your wheelchair throughout the journey: no transfers, no lifting. The vehicle is matched to your group size. If you're interested in a self-drive itinerary, speak with your Travel Consultant about what options are available for your situation.
Is Iceland accessible for people who use wheelchairs?
More than most people expect. Iceland's most famous sights, including Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, the Blue Lagoon, Gullfoss waterfall, and the Geysir area, are accessible by wheelchair with the right planning. The key is choosing routes and stops that have paved paths, accessible viewing platforms, and parking close to the main viewpoints. Iceland Unlimited plans every accessible itinerary around what's genuinely reachable, not just what looks good on paper.
