Accessible Travel in Iceland

Iceland is a fascinating country and known for its unique landscapes and marvelous natural sceneries. If you wish to explore Iceland as a wheelchair user, we think it is essential to be informed about your possibilities when traveling in this remote and charming island.

Iceland Unlimited is the only travel agency in Iceland specialized in accessible tours. For more than 10 years we have been organizing a variety of different tours for wheelchair users and travelers with mobility issues. Our goal is to make Iceland accessible for everybody and our team of creative experts, works with each and every client with the goal to create the best itinerary that fits each guest’s needs and travel expectations when traveling in Iceland.

Depending on the type of restriction and the type of wheelchair, we will gladly put together a tailor-made travel package for you. Our itineraries and proposals are customized to your interests and needs, each tour is designed to create long-lasting memories.

Accessible Self-Drive Tours in Iceland

A great way to explore Iceland is by rental car. If required, we can organize a rental car with hand control for you. Self-drive tours are only suitable for people using a manual wheelchair that can be stored in the back of the car.

A very popular tour is our 7-day wheelchair-accessible South Coast tour. However, most of our standard self-drive tours can be adjusted and be adapted to fit the needs and preferences of our wheelchair user’s guests. We at Iceland Unlimited use the following system to rate the level of difficulty.

Moderate
These tours are suitable for most manual wheelchair users. The majority of the described places and activities can be visited as a wheelchair user.

Challenging
These tours are in general doable for manual wheelchair users. The itinerary would be slightly adjusted to ensure that the experience is fully accessible.

Not Recommended
We do not recommend these self-drive tours to wheelchair users.  The reason being that most of the places and activities included are not accessible.

Accessible Guided Group Tours in Iceland

At the present time,  all standard group tours in Iceland are not suitable for wheelchair users. While we hope to soon be able to accommodate the request of accessible group tours with guaranteed departure, at the moment there is no tour operator on the island that offers scheduled group tours in a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Consequently, all our standard guided day tours and multi-day tours are unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair users. Selected tours can be adjusted as a privately guided tour.

During the summer, Iceland Unlimited offers a 7-day tour with the guaranteed departure that is suitable for guests using either manual or automatic wheelchair. This tour takes place in an accessible vehicle with a wheelchair ramp and if interested, we invite you to click here to find more information and details about the experience.

Accessible Privately Guided Tours in Iceland

The most popular and flexible way to travel as a wheelchair user in Iceland is on a privately guided tour. Privately guided tours will give you the luxury of having a private English-speaking local and experienced driver/guide with you during the trip on the road.

We strongly recommend considering the added value of this experience since it will allow you to not have to worry about driving and distances and you can fully rely and trust on the expertise of your private guide while comfortably being guided in an accessible vehicle. Private tours also allow a level of flexibility that is perfect when traveling with special mobility needs.

Accessible Private Day Tours

We offer a variety of day tours from Reykjavik suitable both for manual and automatic wheelchair users. These tours are very popular for our guests visiting Iceland by cruise ship or coming to Iceland for a quick stopover. The most popular accessible day trips include our Golden Circle tour with geysers, the Gullfoss Waterfall and Thingvellir National Park. We can also organize a day tour to the volcanic active peninsula of Reykjanes, where the famous Blue Lagoon is located. Other interesting options for a day tour from Reykjavik include the Snaefellsnes peninsula in the western part of Iceland and the south coast with its countless and impressive waterfalls, glaciers and the famous black sand beaches.

We at Iceland Unlimited are happy to arrange tours with vehicles equipped with wheelchair ramp when the tour starts from Reykjavík. As for other pick-up and starting locations (for example in other cities where cruise ships dock like Seyðisfjörður, Akureyri, Ísafjörður) this type of service is currently not available due to lack of vehicles with wheelchair ramps.

Outside of Reykjavik, we are happy to offer private day tours for manual wheelchair user able to access the vehicle independently.

Accessible Private Multi-Day Tours

We at Iceland Unlimited are happy to design multi-day travel packages for you. At this link, you can review an example of a 5-day trip.

We ask all our guests interested in an accessible Iceland tour package to send us a message with a few more details about your travel ideas (travel month, duration, type of package). It would be also highly appreciated if you could provide us with more details about the type of wheelchair you are using and your fitness level. We customize all our accessible tours to the individual needs of each of our clients.
