Katla Ice Cave Tour from Vik

Explore the unique Katla Ice Cave, famous for blue and black ice. The astonishing Katla Ice Cave is located far away from the regular tourist trail and is only reachable by Super Jeep. It got its name from the mighty Katla volcano, one of Iceland’s most explosive volcanoes, located underneath Iceland’s fourth largest ice cap, Mýrdalsjökull. Katla Ice Cave is the only one available all year in the South Coast area.

Are you coming to Iceland for a self-drive tour? This ice cave tour starting from Vík is an amazing experience and makes an unforgettable Iceland holiday even more special. Hop on a huge super jeep and explore a natural ice cave underneath Katla volcano. Experience lunar landscapes, mountains covered with green moss, and a fun super jeep ride on a rough mountain track. Our Katla Ice Cave tour from Vík can be perfectly added to one of our self-drive tours.

You will meet your guide in the center of Vík. Enter an impressive super jeep and just behind Vík you will leave the regular road and will follow a rough mountain road for approximately 40 minutes. This road is bumpy, and the views are out-of-this-world. You will get a good impression of the uninhabited highlands of Iceland, and you will experience an interesting combination of a black stone desert and impressive mountains covered in green moss.

When you arrive at the glacier, your guide will provide you with all the necessary equipment such as a helmet and crampons. After a short safety instruction and a 20 to 30 minutes’ walk, you will reach Katla ice cave. In the cave, blue ice meets volcanic ash from the former eruptions of Katla volcano. The views are truly spectacular with amazing black ice as well as some blue ice features. After a unique ice cave experience, you will drive back to Vík.

When booking this tour please have in mind that the Icelandic glaciers are changing all the time. The Katla ice cave therefore always looks different. This makes the tour so unique and special. The walk is easy and with the crampons, you can also walk inside the ice cave without difficulties.
