Home / Day Tours / Highlands / Askja, Víti, Holuhraun and more – Super Jeep Highlands Adventure
Are you feeling adventurous? Would you like to explore Iceland off the beaten track, accompanied by the expertise of a knowledgeable guide? This tour may be the perfect choice for you! Hop on a Super Jeep and cross the remote Highlands, its wilderness, vast spaces, and Martian-like landscapes. This tour focuses on a flexible, small-group experience and a relaxed, yet thrilling, atmosphere.
The first stop of this exciting tour is the stunning Herðubreiðarlindir oasis, located in the middle of Iceland‘s lava and ash deserts. It is often referred to as „the last water before the lava field“, as it is rich in freshwater springs. Here you might enjoy a guided walk to a shelter of a well-known outlaw (Fjalla Eyvindur), or just simply sit down by the stream and admire the magical surroundings.
Next, you will head to the highlight of the tour, which happens to be the mighty Askja caldera, including the Öskjuvatn lake. Askja is a large cauldron-like hollow that formed shortly after the emptying of a magma chamber in a volcanic eruption that took place at the end of the last Ice Age. Take a 2,5 kilometer long, easy-to-moderate hike (depending on the weather conditions and snow level) which takes up to 45 minutes one way. The picturesque Öskjuvatn lake happens to be the deepest one in Iceland, reaching the depths of 217 meters.
Right next to it, you will get to admire the much smaller Víti crater, but not less charming by any means! If you wish to have an unforgettable dip in its geothermal water, it is your time to do so. Its milky blue waters remind of the Blue Lagoon, but the temperature usually varies from 18°C to 26°C. Don‘t forget to bring your swimwear to enjoy the most adventurous swim of your life!
You will also get a glimpse of the fascinating Holuhraun lava field, a result of a fissure eruption that took place in 2014. It covers more than 85 km², and it is the largest lava field to be formed since 1783.
Please note that the tour can take up to 13 hours, therefore it is necessary to bring with your enough food and water for the whole day. Two meals, snacks, and lots of water are highly recommended. The tour stops at Dreki mountain hut for a picnic.
This guided Highlands tour is operated by one of our reliable partners. This is a flexible tour, therefore the order of attractions might be subject to change. It is possible to upgrade to a private experience.
