Welcome to your New Year´s tour in Iceland. Our private chauffeur waits for you in the arrival hall of the airport and transfers you to your accommodation in central Reykjavík. During the day we recommend to explore the center of Reykjavík. It is also possible to “prepare yourself” for the evening by visiting the Northern Lights Centre in the old harbor. Learn more about the magic lights before seeing (hopefully) tonight how beautiful they are in real.
In the evening you will visit Laugarvatn Fontana´s open-air geothermal baths where you can relax in the warm pools and natural steam rooms. Enjoy a local style buffet (included) before heading out to hunt for the Northern Lights. Iceland is one of the best places in Europe to see the Northern Lights because of its location so close to the Arctic circle. You will have the chance of spotting colors in the sky ranging from green to red and even purple. After viewing the Northern Lights for a while you drive back to Reykjavik and at approximately 01:00 a.m. you will be back at your accommodation.
Highlights of the day: Reykjavík City, Northern Lights Centre (entrance not included), visit of Fontana Spa, dinner buffet, Northern Lights tour
Today you explore the so-called Golden Circle with the three primary stops Þingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. The tour is a small group tour in a super jeep which is more personal and intimate. You combine the most popular sites in Iceland with an exciting drive to a glacier.
After seeing the highlights of the golden circle, your guide takes you to the second largest glacier Langjökull. The road to the glacier is impassable for normal cars during winter and normally there is a lot of snow in December. Enjoy the breathtaking views and some super jeep fun in this remote area of Iceland. After an exciting day in the Icelandic nature, you will be back in Reykjavik in the evening.
Highlights of the day: The Golden Circle, Þingvellir National Park, Geyser spouting hot springs, Gullfoss waterfall, and more
Today you go on a guided minibus tour to the South of Iceland with an easy glacier walk on Sólheimajökull glacier included. You will visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can walk behind this magnificent wall of water and you will also stop at Skogafoss waterfall. During winter the waterfalls are often partly frozen which gives them a unique look. After that, it is time for the glacier walk and you will explore a wonderland of ice formations, ridges, and deep crevasses. Not many people can say that they have walked on a glacier but today you will be one of them!
In the afternoon your guide shows you the beautiful black sand beach of Reynisfara. This beach features stacks of basalt columns that wall off surrounding cliffs scattered with caves. Offshore you will see the Reynisdrangar pillars, basalt rock stacks that rise from the sea. Icelandic legend says they were trolls turned into rock by the rising sun when they came home late after a fishing trip.
Highlights of the day: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfall, black sand beach of Reynisfara, Reynisdrangar pillars, 1-hour glacier walk
In the morning you will go on a guided tour of the volcanic active Reykjanes peninsula. On your way, you will visit the geothermal area in Krysuvik. There you will find boiling mud pools and colorful mountains. The next stop will be at the “Bridge between Continents”. This is a 15 meters long footbridge spanning a rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. If time allows, you might make a short photo stop at Gunnuhver and its hot springs. In the early afternoon, you will go on an adventurous ATV tour on Reykjanes peninsula. During this one hour tour, you will drive along lava and black sand on top of a mountain with a great view over the whole area. The ATVs are automatic and easy to drive, so no experience is needed.
You have some time in the afternoon to prepare for the evening. You will enjoy a great New Year’s Eve buffet in Haust Restaurant. After dinner, you will visit a bonfire. The custom of having bonfires on New Year’s Eve in Iceland dates back to the 18th century and the locals gather around the several bonfires dispersed all over the city, celebrating and singing. You will be back in the city center for the big firework show at midnight and one of the best (but also most crowded places) is at the Hallgrims Church. After the fireworks show you can experience the world famous and thrilling Reykjavik nightlife.
Highlights of the day: ATV tour, visit of a bonfire, fireworks, Reykjavik’s nightlife, and more
After the last night festivities, you have a free day to sleep late and relax a bit. We recommend a walk in central Reykjavík to get some fresh air and explore some of the highlights of the city. Visit the Hallgrims church and take a look at the Einar Jónsson Sculpture Garden next to the church (free entrance). Einar Jónsson is one of the most famous Icelandic artists and his bronze casts are mostly figurative sculptures which fuse classical art with northern myth. Walk along Reykjavik’s scenic waterfront, look out for the remarkable Solfar Sun Voyager sculpture and do not miss the modern Harpa Music Hall. Behind Harpa, you also find a picturesque small yellow lighthouse.
In the early afternoon, you will visit the famous Blue Lagoon, a spa located in a magnificent black lava field. The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur and bathing in the milky blue water makes your skin super soft.
Highlights of the day: Reykjavik, visit of the Blue Lagoon
Optional activities: Winter whale watching, Northern Lights Tour in a super jeep
