West Iceland and the Westfjords
Welcome to your honeymoon in Iceland. You will be transferred to your accommodation in the center of Reykjavík. In the afternoon you have free time to explore Reykjavík and we recommend to enjoy the view over the city from the Hallgrímskirkja church tower. In the evening we recommend that you have dinner at one of Reykjavík’s gourmet restaurants and later the bars are open and you can drink a toast to an unforgettable honeymoon in Iceland.
Today you receive your rental car and you will visit the beautiful peninsula Snæfellsnes. There are plenty of things to do and if you are interested in a nice hiking tour you should visit the volcanic crater Eldborg in the morning. We can also organise a horseback riding tour along the beautiful beach of Snæfellsnes for you. Must see is definitely the romantic old church in Buðir. From there you reach a beautiful golden sand beach in only 10 minutes. You can also visit the beach near the abandoned farm of Ytri Tunga which is well-known for its seal colony. You stay for the night in a romantic hotel in this area.
The next highlight of your honeymoon in Iceland is the visit of a very charming island today. In the morning you take a ferry from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur in the Westfjords. On the way, you will make a stopover on the small island Flatey where you spend the day. Cars are not allowed on this island so you will leave your rental car on the ferry and it will wait for you in Brjánslækur. On Flatey time literally stands still and it is like travelling back in time. Most of Flatey’s houses are from the 19th century and it is the ideal place for travellers who want to get a feeling of the old days. Approx. 19:00 p.m. you will arrive in the Westfjords and you drive to Patreksfjörður where you will stay for the night.
Today you visit Látrabjarg the westernmost part of Iceland. Látrabjarg is Europe’s largest bird cliff and it is famous for how close you can get to watch the puffins. It provides stunning photographic opportunities from close range since these little guys are completely unafraid of people. Later today you will visit a 10 km long red sand beach called Rauðarsandur. Enjoy the breath-taking landscape and keep an eye out for seals that sometimes play with their young’s on the beach.
Other places worth visiting are the small villages of Tálknafjörður and Bíldudalur. From Bíldudalur it is also possible to drive to Selárdalur, which has an outdoor museum displaying interesting sculptures from Samúel Jónsson. Another option is to drive to one of Iceland‘s most stunning waterfall, Dynjandi. A short hike up will allow you to appreciate it in all of its splendour. Travel back to your accommodation for the night.
Today will be your longest driving day! Driving from the Westfjords to the West coast of Iceland is a magical challenge. The drive consists of gravel road offering breathtaking views of the Breiðafjörður bay which has countless amount of islands. Make your way to Flókalundur where nearby you will find a romantic natural pool just by the oceanside. Continue your way over rising mountains to Búðardalur. Next stop should be at Eiriksstaðir Museum, a replica of an old Viking farm. With only one mountain road left, make your way to Borgarfjörður with all of its sights such as Grábrók, Deildartunguhver and Hraunfossar. You will stay the night in a romantic hotel in the area.
During your honeymoon in Iceland you cannot miss the famous golden circle and therefore you will visit today Þingvellir National Park, the Geyser geothermal area and the Gullfoss waterfall. First stop is at the National Park Þingvellir where you can literally walk between the American and European tectonic plates. The continental drift can be clearly seen in this area, so be sure to have a look into Silfra fissure. Next stop is the geothermally active valley of Haukadalur which contains the geysers ‘Geysir’ and ‘Strokkur’. While ‘Geysir’ has been inactive for a long time, ‘Strokkur’ erupts every 5 to 10 minutes and is a wonderful photo motif. In the afternoon you visit Gullfoss the golden waterfall. Gullfoss is Iceland´s most famous waterfall and definitely one of the natural wonders of the world. In the area are a couple of geothermal areas and we highly recommend the one in Flúðir, called the Secret Lagoon, which is actually the oldest geothermal pool in Iceland. Another one is Fontana Spa in Laugarvatn. Stay the night in the area.
Today you will return to the city but with a slight twist. Drive west from your hotel and make a left turn in the village of Selfoss, towards the coast and head for the Reykjanes peninsula; an active geothermal area and a diamond in the rough. In Seltún (Krýsuvík) you will find boiling mud pools and colourful mountains. (There are two ways of getting there: One is by using the map, the other is by following the sulfur “aroma”!) Continue along the coastline to Grindavík village where you’ll find the Salt-fish Museum; a museum dedicated to the history of salt fish that in the late 19th century was to Iceland’s exporting industry what oil is to Saudi Arabia.
Continue to the unique Blue Lagoon where you can stop to relax and unwind after a few days on the road in the warm milky blue waters. We can also book an in-water massage for you which is the best way to relax. Continue to your hotel in Reykjavik after returning the rental car. Overnight in the heart of the city.
Unfortunately, your honeymoon in Iceland is coming to an end and this is your last day in Iceland. If your flight is in the afternoon you still have some time to do last minute shopping or visit Reykjavík‘s most remarkable sights, such as Hallgrímskirkja church, walk next to the pond or even have a romantic brunch.
Transfer to the International Airport Keflavik. We hope you enjoyed your honeymoon in Iceland and we wish you a safe journey.
