More of Iceland is reachable than you might think

The Blue Lagoon has an accessible changing room and a wheelchair for entering the water. The Geysir area has paved paths and an accessible restaurant on site. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon has an amphibian boat tour that boards from flat ground. Þingvellir National Park has accessible boardwalks through the rift valley.

These are not workarounds. They are genuinely good experiences that happen to be accessible. Your Travel Consultant knows which stops work, which have limitations, and how to build an itinerary that doesn't ask you to compromise on what Iceland is actually worth seeing.

Every itinerary is a starting point

No two accessible trips are the same. A power wheelchair user and a person using a walker have different requirements at the same attraction. Your Travel Consultant will ask the right questions before building your itinerary. If you see a tour that's close to what you want, start there. If you'd rather build from scratch, that works too.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to your questions about our tours and travel experiences in Iceland and beyond.

Is Iceland wheelchair accessible?

Iceland has more accessible attractions than most people expect. Major sites including the Blue Lagoon, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Geysir, Gullfoss, and Þingvellir National Park all have accessible paths or viewing areas confirmed on IUN tour pages. Your Travel Consultant will be honest about which stops work well for wheelchair users and which to approach differently or skip.

What vehicles are available for wheelchair users in Iceland?

Iceland Unlimited arranges ramp-access vehicles for wheelchair users who need to remain in their wheelchair during transit, and hand-controlled rental cars for independent wheelchair users who drive. Both are arranged at booking through your Travel Consultant. You do not need to bring your own vehicle or arrange this separately.

Do I need to bring my own wheelchair or mobility equipment to Iceland?

No. Iceland Unlimited arranges wheelchair rental, scooter rental, shower chairs, and other mobility aids locally. You do not need to fly with your equipment. Your Travel Consultant will confirm what is available and arrange everything before you travel.

How does Iceland Unlimited verify accessibility at hotels?

Every hotel on an accessible Iceland itinerary has been checked for the details that matter to wheelchair users: roll-in showers, wide doorways, ground-floor rooms or elevator access, and toilet and shower rails where needed. Your Travel Consultant confirms accessibility at each property for your specific situation before the trip is confirmed.

Can a person who uses a wheelchair join a small group tour in Iceland?

Small group tours use standard vehicles without ramps and move at a group pace that cannot accommodate the specialist equipment or route adaptations wheelchair users require. Iceland Unlimited's accessible tours are private, either self-drive with a ramp vehicle or privately guided with an accessible minibus. Your Travel Consultant will explain the options for your specific situation.

Is the Blue Lagoon accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes. The Blue Lagoon has an accessible changing room and provides a special wheelchair for entering the water. It is one of the most accessible geothermal experiences in Iceland and features on IUN's accessible tour itineraries.
