The Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Iceland & Reykjavík

dAY STARTS IN
Keflavík Airport
DAY ENDS IN
Reykjavík
DRIVING DISTANCE
~50 km / 31 miles
About your day

Your family’s 11-day Iceland Adventure tour starts as soon as you land at Keflavík airport on the Reykjanes peninsula, a 45-minute drive from the capital. A private transfer takes you straight to your hotel in downtown Reykjavík, driving through volcanic landscapes and offering your first glimpse of Iceland’s extraordinary scenery.

Once you’ve settled in, Reykjavík is yours for the afternoon. Take the elevator to the top of Hallgrímskirkja for panoramic views over the city and the surrounding mountains. Wander the waterfront from the Sun Voyager sculpture to the glass-covered opera hall at Harpa, and find a restaurant around the Old Harbor for your first taste of Icelandic cuisine. Whale watching tours sail from the harbor throughout the day, and your Travel Consultant will have all the options ready for you before you arrive.

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • Perlan Wonders of Iceland (for all ages)
  • Whale Watching Reykjavík (for all ages)
  • Puffin Watching Boat Tour, Reykjavík (seasonal May–Aug, for all ages)
  • FlyOver Iceland (ages 5+)

Suggested hotel: Reykjavík Residence (Superior)

Day 2: The Golden Circle, Lava Tunnel & Fontana

dAY STARTS IN
Reykjavík
DAY ENDS IN
Laugarvatn
DRIVING DISTANCE
~260 km / 161 miles
About your day

After breakfast, pick up your rental cars and start the first day of your journey around Iceland. The first stop is the Lava Tunnel at Raufarhólshellir, just 40 minutes from Reykjavík: a kilometer-long lava tube formed 5,000 years ago, filled with ice formations, spectacular skylights, and a massive lava chamber. The minimum age to join is 3 years old, and it sets the tone for the trip perfectly.

Continue to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull slowly apart. You can walk the rift valley on good paths. The Golden Circle continues to Geysir, where Strokkur shoots superheated water sky-high every few minutes. Nobody gets bored waiting for it. Gullfoss waterfall thunders into its canyon and is impossible to walk away from quickly. In the afternoon, Laugarvatn Fontana is one of Iceland’s most family-friendly geothermal spas, built right beside the lake with steam baths, outdoor pools, and a sauna built over a natural hot spring vent. Overnight in the Laugarvatn area.

Activities

  • Lava Tunnel Tour (included, ages 3+)

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • Bread Baking & Tasting Tour at Laugarvatn Fontana (for all ages)
  • Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths (for all ages)
  • Silfra Snorkeling or Diving (ages 12+)

Suggested hotel: Hotel Geysir / Hotel Grímsborgir  (Superior)

Day 3: The South Coast & Lava Show

dAY STARTS IN
Laugarvatn
DAY ENDS IN
Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur
DRIVING DISTANCE
~185 km / 115 miles
About your day

The South Coast of Iceland is a non-stop parade of dramatic scenery. Seljalandsfoss comes first: a waterfall with a path that runs all the way around behind it, which is something children talk about for years. Wear waterproofs. Skógafoss follows, 60 meters of water dropping into open air, wide and powerful and easy to approach. The Skógar Folk Museum’s collection of more than 18,000 artifacts tells the story of Icelandic life over the centuries.

From here it’s a short drive to the Dyrhólaey promontory, with views over endless black sand beaches and the chance to spot puffins. Reynisfjara black sand beach is extraordinary: basalt columns rising in perfect geometric stacks from the sand, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore. The waves here arrive fast and without warning. Your Travel Consultant will make sure everyone knows the beach rules before you leave the car park. The Lava Show in Vík closes the day: real molten lava poured on stage in front of you, with the heat and sound of it. Included in the tour and a guaranteed highlight for every age. Overnight in Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Activities

  • Lava Show, Vík (included, for all ages)

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • Glacier Walk on Sólheimajökull (ages 8+)
  • Katla Ice Cave Tour from Vík (ages 6+)

Suggested hotel: Hotel Katla (Classic), Hotel Vík (Superior), or Hotel Magma (Classic or Superior)

Day 4: Vatnajökull National Park & the Glacier Lagoon

dAY STARTS IN
Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur area
DAY ENDS IN
Höfn
DRIVING DISTANCE
~270 km / 167 miles
About your day

Drive east across the black sand plain below Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park is where the walk to Svartifoss waterfall is worth making: basalt columns framing a black waterfall in a setting that looks like it was designed. It’s a moderate walk of around 1.5 km each way. The Svínafellsjökull glacier tongue is close to the road and worth a stop.

Visit the smaller and less crowded Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon before heading to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs the size of houses drift in silence across the water. The amphibious boat tour drives directly into the lagoon from flat ground and motors out among the icebergs: blues and whites that don’t photograph the way they look in person, which is why everyone tries anyway. Diamond Beach is just across the road, the same icebergs washed ashore on black sand and catching the light. Tonight, Höfn, Iceland’s lobster capital, and a good reason to book a table in advance.

Activities

  • Amphibian Boat Tour, Jökulsárlón (included, for all ages)

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • Zodiac Boat Tour, Jökulsárlón (ages 10+)
  • Zodiac Boat Tour, Fjallsárlón (ages 5+)

Suggested hotel: Hotel Höfn, Fosshótel Vatnajökull (Classic)

Day 5: The Eastfjords & Vök Baths

dAY STARTS IN
Höfn
DAY ENDS IN
Egilsstaðir
DRIVING DISTANCE
~260km / 161 miles
About your day

The Eastfjords are the part of the Ring Road that most people drive through too fast. The coastal road from Höfn to Egilsstaðir winds through a succession of small fjord villages, each tucked into its own fjord. Djúpivogur is a lovely village often visited by reindeer, with a harbor featuring a sculptural display of 34 enormous eggs, each representing a local bird species.

Petra’s Stone Collection in Stöðvarfjörður is unlike anything else on the route: a beautifully curated museum and garden filled with minerals and stones gathered by one local woman over her lifetime. Children who like rocks will be transfixed. Fáskrúðsfjörður still carries French street signs: a remnant of the fishing fleets that used this fjord as their base, and the kind of detail that makes children curious. If you want to explore more today, you can take the optional detour to Seyðisfjörður. The day ends at Vök Baths, a floating geothermal spa set on the edge of Lake Urriðavatn just outside Egilsstaðir. The pools extend out over the water. A perfect family end to a long drive day.

Activities

  • Vök Baths, Egilsstaðir (included, for all ages)

Suggested hotel: Lake Hotel (classic) or Hotel Hallormsstaður (superior)

Day 6: The Diamond Circle & Whale Watching

dAY STARTS IN
Egilsstaðir
DAY ENDS IN
Húsavík
DRIVING DISTANCE
~260 km / 161 miles
About your day

Drive north toward the Diamond Circle. Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe: milky-grey meltwater roars over a hundred-meter-wide cascade, tumbling nearly 45 meters into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, making the ground tremble beneath your feet. The noise reaches you before you see it. Ásbyrgi canyon follows: an immense horseshoe-shaped glacial canyon with towering near-vertical walls and a flat forested floor that feels almost impossible given the landscape around it. Both stops are genuinely impressive for all ages.

The afternoon brings Húsavík, Iceland’s whale watching capital. Skjálfandi Bay has near-perfect records: humpbacks, minkes, and even blue whales are spotted here regularly. Your Travel Consultant will confirm the right vessel for your family before you travel, as there are several options to choose from. You’ll stay overnight in Húsavík, where you can also enjoy the Eurovision Museum or a dip at the GeoSea geothermal spa.

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • Classic Whale Watching, Húsavík (included, for all ages)
  • RIB Boat Express Whale Watching, Húsavík (ages 8+)
  • Schooner Whale Watching, Húsavík (for all ages)
  • Puffin Watching Boat, Húsavík (seasonal May–Aug, for all ages)

Suggested hotel: Fosshótel Húsavík (Classic)

Day 7: Lake Mývatn & Akureyri

dAY STARTS IN
Húsavík
DAY ENDS IN
Akureyri
DRIVING DISTANCE
~130 km / 80 miles
About your day

Lake Mývatn is the highlight today: a beautiful bird-filled lake lined with eye-catching volcanic formations. Wonder at the Námaskarð geothermal field with its steaming mud pools and sulfurous vents. The Dimmuborgir lava formations reward a walk through them, with several loop options of different lengths. The Skútustaðir pseudocraters rise from the lake’s edge in near-perfect rows. Krafla volcano and the vivid Víti crater lake are worth adding if the group has the energy.

Continue west to Akureyri, Iceland’s northern capital. Stop on the way at the powerful waterfall Goðafoss. The Akureyri Swimming Pool is one of the best in Iceland: outdoor pools, hot tubs, waterslides, and the kind of facility that makes children forget they’ve been in a car all week. Akureyri also works well for a group split: the local pool for some, the botanical garden or Forest Lagoon for others. The Christmas House is open year-round and worth a stop for younger children. An optional zipline gives a very different view of the town.

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • Earth Lagoon, Mývatn (for all ages)
  • Lofthellir Lava Cave, Mývatn (ages 8+)
  • Zipline, Akureyri (ages 8+)
  • Forest Lagoon, Akureyri (for all ages)

Suggested hotel: Hotel KEA (Classic/Supperior)

Day 8: Akureyri to Borgarnes

dAY STARTS IN
Akureyri
DAY ENDS IN
Borgarnes area
DRIVING DISTANCE
~320 km / 199 miles
About your day

Heading south from Akureyri, the Ring Road passes through the scenic Öxnadalur and Skagafjörður valleys: this is Iceland’s horse country, and the riding here is among the best in the country. The Icelandic horse is small, sure-footed, and calm, and riding across this valley is the kind of stop that works at every age. No previous experience needed. Your horseback riding adventure is already included.

Continue south through Varmahlíð with a photo stop at the old turf church of Víðimýrarkirkja before you drive into West Iceland. If you want to stretch your legs, try the short climb up the mossy volcanic craters at Grábrók, with fine views from the top. Borgarnes is your base for the next two nights, ideally positioned for tomorrow’s choice between Snæfellsnes to the west and Langjökull glacier to the east. The Settlement Center in Borgarnes tells Iceland’s Norse history through a well-designed indoor exhibition.

Activities

  • Horseback Riding Tour, Skagafjörður (included, ages 6+)

Suggested hotel: Hotel Hamar (Classic)

Day 9: Snæfellsnes or Into the Glacier

dAY STARTS IN
Borgarnes area
DAY ENDS IN
Borgarnes area
DRIVING DISTANCE
~125–300 km / 78–186 miles (day trip)
About your day

No need for packing this morning: you’re staying in Borgarnes for a second night. A day trip, with two excellent options depending on what your family wants. Your Travel Consultant will confirm which works best before you travel.

Option A: Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Often called Iceland in miniature, it packs glaciers, lava fields, seal colonies, a black church, sea cliffs, and Kirkjufell mountain into a single day. Snæfellsjökull glacier caps the western tip: the same glacier Jules Verne chose as the entrance to the center of the earth.

Option B: Into the Glacier at Langjökull. A man-made tunnel bored deep into Europe’s second largest glacier, with ice walls, chambers, and the genuine sense of being inside something ancient. Both options return to Borgarnes for the night.

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • Into the Glacier, Langjökull (for all ages)

Suggested hotel: Hotel Hamar

Day 10: Borgarfjörður & Reykjavík

dAY STARTS IN
Borgarnes area
DAY ENDS IN
Reykjavík
DRIVING DISTANCE
~180 km / 111 miles
About your day

After breakfast on your final full day on the road, you can either head straight to Reykjavík or explore the Viking heartlands of West Iceland first. A short drive inland brings you to Hraunfossar, where glacial meltwater seeps from beneath a lava field into the Hvítá river in a long curtain of small falls: one of Iceland’s most quietly extraordinary sights, and very close to the road. Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring, is close by.

Head back to Reykjavík when you are ready, closing the loop on your family’s Ring Road adventure. Once back in the city, you can visit Laugardalslaug, one of the country’s largest swimming pools, where the children can enjoy themselves on the waterslides. In the evening, return the rental cars and check into your hotel for the last night.

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • Krauma Geothermal Baths, West Iceland (for all ages)

Suggested hotel: Reykjavík Residence (Superior)

Day 11: The Blue Lagoon & departure

dAY STARTS IN
Reykjavík
DAY ENDS IN
Keflavík Airport
DRIVING DISTANCE
~75 km / 46 miles
About your day

Your Iceland adventure has one more treat in store. En route to the airport, the Blue Lagoon is your final encounter with Iceland’s lava landscapes: soak in the restorative, milky-blue waters, knowing your luggage is safely stored and a private transfer will take you to the airport in good time for your flight.

If your family wants an extra day in Reykjavík before flying home, your Travel Consultant can build that in. There’s so much to see: FlyOver Iceland, Perlan’s Wonders of Iceland, Whales of Iceland, the National Museum, the Maritime Museum, and the Settlement Exhibition. Just ask your Travel Consultant, and we’ll build in the time you need.

Activities

  • Blue Lagoon, Comfort entrance (included, ages 2+)

Optional – book through your Travel Consultant

  • FlyOver Iceland (ages 5+)
  • Perlan Wonders of Iceland (for all ages)
  • Whales of Iceland Exhibition (for all ages)
